At the table East doubled and West left it in. Not a good idea, but in the original write-up it was stated that East should pass over 3club!!!! The defence to 3club wasn't very good either. East threw diamondA on a second round of hearts and ended up conceding a trick to dummy's diamond10. -870!

I don't necessarily think East's double is categorically for penalties and West ought to have bid 3diamond. East probably ought to have bid 3spade over 3club anyway - partner must surely be short in clubs. After this strong bidding West should raise to 4spade - which is unbeatable. Agree?
