Pass and await developments? 2NT? No, Colin Simpson doubled! Some players use a double in this position to confirm a strong heart suit, but apparently Colin Simpson of England was worried that it might be South who held it - intent on passing North's Michaels cue-bid! The double was meant to ensure that, in the event of South passing, North would change the potential contract to something more favourable to East - it's not a bad hand for defending against a black suit. It didn't happen like that..
