Well, West duly opened 2heart. East passed - who could blame him?! That finished the bidding and North led clubK, switching to a heart at trick two. Declarer played a spade to the queen and ace but the defence attempted to cash three clubs. Declarer ruffed, drew trumps and ditched his diamonds on the spade winners to make 2heart plus one.

Let's try again. South overtakes the club and leads a spade to his partner's marked ace. After a spade ruff, ace and another diamond the contract is doomed to be one off. And what happens if West passes?
