Declarer used a very well thought out line ... to make fewer tricks than anyone else!! He came to heartA at trick two and played diamondA, diamondK. The worst that could happen was that North could ruff - and he did! The spade return was won in dummy with the queen, a diamond ruffed, dummy entered with heartK and the diamonds established with a final heart ruff. With a trump still in dummy twelve tricks were thus guaranteed irrespective of the spade split. This line works for all distributions where there is no spade or diamond void. As you can see, drawing two rounds of trumps leads to an inevitable thirteen tricks - sometimes virtue really must be its own reward... because ....
