Surely if he was giving a count then he'd prefer the eight or even the six, and if he wanted a spade switch he's surely drop the jack. In short, the only time club3 looks right is when he's trying to induce a diamond switch.

Maybe East was the victim of his failure to double 5heart for a lead, but West woodenly continued with a club and 5heart was now impregnable.
