. . . North decided to try to get the clubs going with ace and another. This went to the queen and king, so West continued hearts and East won the king to clear the suit. Declarer pressed on with his vain pursuit of the club suit and West cashed his club winners. Still convinced that diamondK was with West, North allowed West's small diamond exit to run round to the jack - or so he had hoped, and with nine top tricks North finished with only eight. This looks like an everyday story of Mrs. Blomkinberger's afternoon cut-in, but it actually occurred in a France-Iceland European Championship match. There's hope for us all.
