You can guess what declarer did at the table. He came to hand with clubK to play a second round of trumps but South won and led clubQ to the king, ruffed. With North holding diamondQ there was no miracle and declarer went down.

With North holding six spades it is much less likely that he holds four diamonds also, so maybe East should have come to hand by playing ace, king and another diamond. If North ruffs the third diamond, threatening a trump promotion for his partner, then East can always discard a loser.
