. . . so cash spadeKQ and diamondAK (hoping that East has two at most) and get off lead with our last club. East takes clubA and can now win two spades and a heart but must give North a heart or dummy a club for the ninth trick.

If East had found the standard spade lead, as did many, then with heartA still intact, all North has to do is play the clubs correctly by leading the eight first. With that out of the way declarer plays a second club towards the king and East has no winning answer.
