Very few Wests would open with 1spade - the bidding would be much more likely to start with a weak No Trump. If we assume North doubles, East might now be reluctant to bid more than an immediate 4spade without the reassurance of a known fit. A modern South would bid 4NT to offer a choice of possible suits and thus the club fit would be found. East-West would do well to make a profitable vulnerable sacrifice.
