I have not been responsible for much improvement in bidding theory but one convention I have always found worthwhile is the so called "Donachie Double" (named after Willie Donachie - the Scottish footballer whose infamous backpass went into his own goal past a wrong-footed Alan Rough) This undervalued ploy is where a double of a freely bid slam is applied with no other reason than that if the opposition make it they are probably on to a good score anyway. The logic is that they may misread the hand if they are doubled!

Playing five card majors with a strong 1NT (15-18) you decide to open 1spade .... partner bids 2diamond and now you employ another very popular convention - the "agricultural" 3NT - can't have partner playing it, can we? Partner puts you back to 4spade. What do you bid now?
