Pass Pass Pass Pass
When North passed, hoping that East might reopen, South was left to stew in 1diamond. Although I doubt whther many modern Norths would pass 1diamond, ii's difficult to criticize either player too heavily. South might have opened with a strong bid such as 2NT ("Sorry partner, I had a diamond mixed in with my hearts") and North could have easily responded with 1heart, but their combined efforts did not stand up well to their North-South counterparts at one of the other tables.
