South should not have panicked at trick two - there is no need to avoid the diamond finesse. East is very likely to have length in diamonds and indeed may have chosen to underlead a suit headed by diamondKQ. West wins diamondK and gives East a second club ruff, but now South wins with a second diamond finesse and immediately plays a trump. East's ruffing potential is finished and South loses only five tricks.
