If you follow it through then you will realise that it must be right to ditch clubA! If you retain it then South will lead a club to the king and exit with one to force you to lead away from diamondAQ, but if you clear the way for East to win clubQ then a diamond through will hold declarer to six tricks.

I'm sure that you would have found it at the table - no sweat! Oh yes, I reckon East should have protected with 2heart at pairs - so West wasn't really on his own after all!
