I cannot believe that North ought to be looking for anything other than a successful part-score after a weak no trump from his partner. The opponents must have some major suit length so if you have a minor suit transfer/escape mechanism then this is surely the time to use it. Nevertheless, if you decided to bid 3club invitational (9-10 points, 6 card suit) rather than use 2NT to transfer in 3club, your partner would accept by bidding 3NT.
