Declarer was Roman Smolski and he led a small club off the dummy at trick two. Yes, East can defeat the contract by playing low and allowing West to win. A spade ruff now sinks the contract. But ask yourself - would you have played low as East? After winning clubJ East switched to a diamond so Smolski won diamondA and led queen of clubs off the dummy throwing his losing diamond from hand. Now West could never regain the lead and the threat of a spade ruff was averted. First a pseudo scissors coup (club4) and then a genuine one (clubQ).
