Probably the last vital clue is that North did not overcall 1spade - surely with five or more spades, heartQJ and a diamond honour he would have overcalled. Therefore South will have more spades and consequently will be more likely to be shorter in diamonds. So rather than play North to hold diamondHx and lead a low diamond now, it must be right to cross to dummy and lead a low one for a finesse of the jack. When diamondQ drops under the ace you are home. And the successful declarer .. Omar Sharif.
