Now the situation is very different - fraught with danger. Declarer would not be conceding easy tricks like this unless he could be sure of almost all the others. Pragmatists would now lay down the diamond ace, but a spade continuation would do just as well. For those who did not take either of these actions, a nasty double squeeze lay in store. Declarer won the club return and hoped that by cashing five heart tricks someone would be in trouble.
