North won spadeK in dummy, cashed diamondQ and played a heart to West's ace. The spade continuation was won in hand, diamondAK were cashed throwing a spade and club from dummy, and a spade ruffed. After returning to hand with a trump, declarer led a small club and covered East's card, neatly end-playing West. A spade would concede a ruff and discard, whereas a club would give up a trick to clubK.

This was the position as North led a club for the first time, having lost just ione trick.
