Declarer must have been in a mild state of shock as he led a diamond towards dummy's king - hoping for miracles. West won diamondA and switched to a low trump, and North's next error of judgement was to insert heartJ. East won and returned a heart, so now North tried spadeQ, ducked all round. By a process of elimination North had finally arrived at the club suit, but the king was not selected. East won and played a third round of hearts - access to dummy was finally achieved with heart9. diamondJ was covered, declarer threw a spade, but it made no difference. In stony silence, the score of five off was entered into the scorecards. Whoops.
