Irene ducked this, so East won and switched to club9. Declarer erred again by rising with the queen, covered by the king and ace. West won the next diamond with the queen, and three rounds of trumps put paid to any cross-ruff. Although South could clearly have done much better by playing on hearts at trick five, West's bidding and play had put the defence in the driving seat for a very welcome 300.
