North could not tell whether South or West held the vital spade6. If South held it, as you would no doubt assume at teams scoring, then it would be imperative to continue with spades while holding clubA. If West held it, then it was important for North to switch, for continuing the suit would not only give a priceless trick away but the fifth spade would never make it to that great trick cashing party in the sky.

In this case North switched and East-West scored another 16/20. North should have envisaged a West shape of 3-2-5-3 or 3-2-4-4, for surely with 4-2-4-3 his response would have been 1spade and with 4-1-5-3 West would have continued with a forcing 2spade over 2heart.
