North looked at dummy and could see six club tricks, a sure heart and at least one spade on the lead. To rise with spadeA would give two declarer two spades immediately, but to duck might see four hearts, and one spade to go with the clubs. So the choices are
1) duck the spade and await what declarer does, acting accordingly
2) win spadeA and lead a low diamond
3) win spadeA and cash diamondAK - quickly.
