. . . South might have got home anyway! Had the defence played a third spade at trick three then South may have smelled a rat. "Why is East forcing me rather than attacking clubs?" The answer to that question could be that he his protecting a strong trump holding and consequently declarer might well decide to ruff in the dummy and play a heart to the nine at trick four - ten tricks. A good way to defend if West had started with heart10x(x) though!
