Rubber bridge is all about reaching game where there is the slightest excuse, particularly when vulnerable, while at the same time being careful to minimise the chances of conceding a painful penalty. North's bidding illustrated both these points:- the aggressive raise to game preceded by the careful prepared opening bid. In addition, the extra information available to declarer because of the overcall might prove helpful in finding a winning line.
