At another table North played an even deeper game by passing over 3NT, reasoning that partner couldn't have many spades, and with hearts bid on his left, 4spade might be too expensive. Besides, what better than defending against 3NT with an establishable eight card suit! North led spade10 and declarer immediately tried to sneak a heart through. North, a mathematician by trade, can still count to thirteen and duly rose with heartA.

I would have loved to see West's face when South showed out on spadeA. Oh yes, the bidding dilemma ....
