This particular East-West were playing in the same qualifying pairs event - and, I am told, struggling to make the cut when they arrived at the penultimate table. East judged that the opposition were likely to be one of the weaker North-South pairs and made a mental note to "go for it". West opened 1heart and rebid 2NT to show a flat 19 count over East's response of 1spade. East rebid 3spade and heard 4diamond from West.
