David decided to give the opposition a chance to go wrong. He cashed clubAK and led spadeJ, covered by West's queen, North's king and East's ace. East had begun the defence along the right lines but failed to carry it through. If he had continued with a fourth diamond after winning spadeA then West's spade8 would have been promoted to a winner, as dummy's spade9 was by now the master trump. As it was, East switched woodenly to a heart and North was able to pick up the hearts using spade9 as an entry.

Alternatively, if West refuses to cover spadeJ, then East has winning alternatives of returning a trump or continuing with diamonds. Try it!
