As long as you have decided to safety-play trumps in some way you would have been OK. Essentially this means running a heart through West and having the courage to duck (or play heart8) when he plays low - as he most certainly will. Even had a singleton honour been with East it would have been OK - you win the diamond return and repeat the finesse. But if East turns out to have heartQ10 or heartK10 a third round of diamonds will force out dummy's ace and you will lose three trump tricks. Almost every declarer in 4heart went down when they inexplicably declined the safety-play, perhaps worried about a 6-1 spade break. And the other game contracts?
