South was already well ahead in the match and unthinkingly returned a heart. Declarer won heartAQ and cashed clubK to strip-squeeze South in the pointed suits. If South discarded a spade declarer would exit with ace and another, but if he ditched a diamond East could simply establish a ninth trick by playing a diamond immediately. Had South continued with spades, he could have taken four spade tricks and diamondA to defeat the contract.

Although South was annoyed with himself, no great harm was done. The match was scored by aggregate totals, and his team won by more than 6000 points.
