Several of you have written to me questioning my suggested line in the 6 contract in Friday's article (14/12/2001). It does indeed appear that it is better to win the second heart in hand, ruff a spade, play ace and another club, ruffed by North, to ruff another spade. Declarer ruffs another club in hand and draws trumps. Twelve tricks. The reason I described the alternative line is that is because how I remember declarer saying he would have played it had East actually returned a heart. Of course my memory may be faulty, or North may have made a too rapid an analysis when he had the easier ride on East's actual return of a club. Sorry for the confusion.
