It's no coincidence that Irving Gordon was Boris Schapiro's partner in both 1998 triumphs - he's also a fine player. Gordon won the opening lead, crossed to dummy's diamondA and led heartK - ruffing out East's ace. South again crossed to dummy with a trump, cashed heartQ throwing a club and cleared up any remaining problem by next leading spadeQ. I don't know if that's the best theoretical line, but it certainly did the business. They went on to win by a substantial margin, with this pair's slam successes fundamental to the final score.
