4heart do I hear you say?
OK, what if South's hand is spadeQJxxxheartAQxxxdiamondKxclubx? That's a mere twelve count, but 6heart is a fair contract. What if South has spadeQJxxxheartAQxxxdiamondKQclubx - 6heart is huge! If you follow the other alternative bidding route of going via fourth suit forcing and reverting to 4heart then at least you might stand a better chance of reaching a good slam when South is not minimum. If partner's hand is as unsuitable as spadeAKJxxxheartQxxxdiamondxxclubQ, as here, there is still no danger of getting too high, when 4heart is good without being certain. At the table North went for the straightforward but very lazy route and West led diamondK.
