This hand is all about timing. With no prospect of establishing a side suit, declarer set about a cross-ruff but, knowing the clubs to be 4-1, West had to avoid leading them too early and thereby allowing North to discard hearts and hence over-ruffing declarer. At trick two he led a deceptive clubJ in order to make North think he was attempting to establish the suit, but North threw a heart as dummy ruffed. heartA for a diamond discard, heart ruff, diamondA, heart ruff. Now it was time to lead a club, and with the defence unable to prevent declarer scoring a further five tricks by alternately ruffing in the minors, East-West score a huge +620.
