Last night was the first round of the county teams championship. This is equally prestigious as the World Championships that are currently concluding in Paris, and the top players have been complaining bitterly about the scheduling of two world ranking competitions at the same time. I'd been called off the subs bench to play with Alan Langley in team in which the other members were full international Nick Stevens and junior international Duncan Happer. Alan and I were playing for the first time, and we began inauspiciously when I failed to bid a game and then sold out to 1NT with 3 cold our way. Fortunately Nick and Duncan returned with a big card, and today's deal was of their many good boards.
