Sick As A Parrot

Beginners learn all about finesses at an early stage, but despite repeated theoretical explanations they often continue to play suits using no-win technique. For example:

South, declarer, holds spadeAxx and North, who is dummy, holds spadeKJx. spadeJ is led from dummy and when East plays low, so does South. When West cannot produce the queen of spades it is very difficult to convince the novice declarer that he has cocked up the theoretically correct play of the spade suit - after all, it has produced three tricks. Usually the explanation is that East is also a complete beginner, but sometimes it is not so.
