Instead of putting all his eggs in the same basket by playing South for diamondQx(x), West decided to give himself an extra chance by cashing diamondAK first. This would not only still pick up diamondQx in the South hand, but also diamondQx in the North slot. If diamondQ did not fall, then declarer planned to play North for clubQx(x) by cashing clubK and finessing the ten.

You can see what happened. The fall of diamondQ removed any problems and West claimed, scoring +1510. So this is the other side of the same scorecard-inspection coin. West could look down his card and see that his grand slam was a key result in his side's victory. However, all these heroics were rendered a little over the top......
