My correspondent, who was East, writes
I'm pretty certain South wasn't aware of the precise club holding in the West and North hands, and North didn't help his partner much, as on the last trump he discarded a spade and held on to his worthless club. This had the effect of making South think that West had clubJ and that consequently he was "genuinely" squeezed in spades and clubs, so he discarded spadeJ and dummy made the last two tricks with spadeA9!

A sensible defender would surely have realised that any club loser West might hold would have been ruffed in dummy, so it's back to the classroom for South.
