The other day I received an amusing e-mail from an exasperated friend. At short notice he had been called in to play in a match of very moderate standard (for him), and he wasn't happy. I had to have a laugh (his style is patronising yet highly amusing) after I'd read his tale of woe, but he also sent me a gem of a hand. Here's his précis of the proceedings ..

- Opponent with a 1-4-4-4 eight count bids Stayman over his partner's 1NT, hears 2, passes and makes 8 tricks. We miss our 10 card spade fit on the inference that the Stayman bidder has spades.
- I go for 1700 (not vul) in a freely-bid 3NT.
- I watch an opponent open an Acol 2 with

and reach a laydown 21 point 3NT.
