At the table South chose 4diamond. This was a cue-bid agreeing hearts, and showed the ace as opposed to a splinter. When West doubled this North-South kept bidding until the music stopped at 6heart. As my correspondent says " A more efficient auction after the first two bids would be 3spade by South, followed by 4club by North, then 4diamond by South. But then in this method, neither North nor South would have a lot more in reserve to show and would subside in game only"
