These four hands all occurred at the table - albeit not at the same time! Note how similar the North/East/South hands are. Strangely enough, in each of these three cases the vital ace of the big hand's singleton suit was in partner's hand and a grand slam was there for the bidding. Theory is all very well, but the practicalities of finding out if partner had a semblance of a fit in one of the suits and then ensuring that partner has the crucial ace opposite was too much for many partnerships.
