If declarer finds himself in an excellent high-scoring contract which he judges few other pairs will reach, then he will abandon unnecessary risk in the search for overtricks and play safely for his contract to ensure a good score . On the other hand, if the contract is a poor one and defeat would be likely to score zero anyway, then declarer must risk everything to achieve success.
