For many years Nicola Smith and Pat Davies were at the forefront of ladies' bridge, winning several world titles and numerous European and domestic trophies. In the 1998 Macallan International Pairs event they finished a highly creditable second to the runaway winners, Geir Helgemo and Tor Helness of Norway. Today's deal finds Smith and Davies up against the pair who have probably inherited their unofficial mantle of best European female pair, Sabine Auken and Daniela von Arnim of Germany.
