Using the subtle "rubbish" inference disclosed on the previous page, you deduce that the clubs might be 3-4 and after winning East's jack at trick one with your ace, return club10. East switches to diamondAJ, so you follow suit and West wins diamondK and also switches - to a spade. You win spadeA, cross to heartA and lead diamond10. What does East do? If he discards you ditch a spade and follow with diamond9 to continue his dilemma. If he ruffs diamond10 you overruff and cross back to heartK, drawing the trumps in the process. clubQ is still there for the vital tenth trick.

The defence can beat 4heart easily if either East or West leads a spade early enough. 3NT would have been a great deal simpler, but then there would have been no story.
