4heart is a better contract. In fact, I think it's cold. On a non-diamond lead, you can ruff two spades or establish clubs, depending on how the defence goes. On a diamond lead, you win, and play heartK which South must duck. You then play three rounds of clubs, ruffing to establish the suit, and heartQ. South wins and must play a spade to try and take out dummy's last heart. When North wins spadeK he must return one for the same reason. If he plays J, you ruff, ruff a diamond back to hand, draw the last trump and give South his spadeA to give you the rest in one hand or another. If he plays a small spade you duck to South's ace and ruff out the jack on the next round.

Not much consolation.
