There appear to be two obvious choices - either make a simple overcall in clubs and retain the possible option of introducing diamonds later, or make a jump bid in clubs and keep everyone, including partner, guessing. At the table West belonged very much to the pressure school of overcalling and his leap to 5club became the final contract.
