^ not for a better player

The alternatives seem to be a) establish the diamonds before drawing trumps b) take a club finesse to ditch an diamond c) cross-ruff intending to lose only three diamonds.

The second alternative seemed far too risky and Gerald Hourd crossed to hand with clubA, ruffed a spade, cashed clubK, ruffed a club and ruffed his last spade. When clubJ was led from the dummy West showed out making it a simple task to ruff in hand, and so heartAKQ provided the balance of the required ten tricks. 4heart was thus made without any worries caused by the 4-0 trump break. Not bad for a beginner eh?
