Placing spadeA with declarer, Roy contemplated underleading clubA before resigning himself to abandoning hopes of diamond ruff and continued with the practical course of cashing clubA. When clubQ from South was followed by declarer's king, the club continuation left declarer without hope. After ruffing and cashing five more trumps, declarer could not end-play either defender and eventually lost to spadeK.
