I would love to report that this elegant and far-seeing line was found at the table, but reality is more depressing. One pair's sequence died at 4spade and they recorded a modest +650.

The other pair duly sailed into the slam but, in the words of my correspondent, ... declarer having won trick one with the clubA , then paused to think what he should do and decided that he should be in the West hand after all to take the spade finesse, so played a club towards the king, only for it to be ruffed. Unlucky - I think not!
The unsung star of the show was North for realising that to double 3club would be fatuous, for East may well have been woken from his dreaming.
