The other pair duly sailed into the slam but, in the words of my correspondent, ... declarer having won trick one with the A , then paused to think what he should do and decided that he should be in the West hand after all to take the spade finesse, so played a club towards the king, only for it to be ruffed. Unlucky - I think not!
The unsung star of the show was North for realising that to double 3 would be fatuous, for East may well have been woken from his dreaming.
