Cronier for France found the correct answer to this problem when he cashed spadeA, squeezing declarer in three suits. What could West discard? A club or heart would allow North to cash heartK and exit with a club, whereas a diamond discard would allow North a safe exit in that suit while still retaining heartK. North-South scored +100.

In the other room the French pair scored +110 in 2spade. North opened a mini No Trump, passed round to West who protected with 2spade, showing clubs. East passed and his side scored 5 IMPs as West lost three trumps and both red kings.
