At one table the bidding started like this and South took a complete stab in the dark by leaping to 6heart. He hoped to find heartKQ and no wasted spade values in the North hand, but I'm not sure that this was wise. It might be easy to say so with the benefit of hindsight, but what would East have done with a solid seven card spade suit? Might he not lurk in the hope of defending against No Trumps? I once saw someone double 1NT with eight solid hearts and the 1-No-Trumper's partner redoubled for business. That was 1000! No, I think North might well have some kind of spade holding, and anything other than the ace is completely wasted.

South did not play hearts to best advantage and lost two tricks in trumps as well as a spade. Meanwhile ...
